A RAID controller is a PCIe card that presents physical SAS, SATA or NVMe drives to the operating system as protected logical volumes, handling parity, cache and write-back in hardware. An HBA (host bus adapter) is the same card class without RAID logic — it passes each drive through individually for software-defined storage such as ZFS, vSAN or Ceph.
