The Dell PowerEdge R740 is the 2U dual-socket workhorse of the 14th-generation PowerEdge line — the direct counterpart to the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10. It is the box most often pulled out of virtualization clusters, VDI pools and mid-size database deployments, which is why used R740s are the easiest 2U Intel platform to source spares for.
This unit is fully configured and ready to populate with your own drives or run as it stands: two Silver 4208 processors, 32GB of DDR4, and two 1.2TB SAS drives already fitted in the 8-bay front cage.
Quick answer: the Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U dual-socket Intel Xeon Scalable server (LGA 3647) with 24 DDR4 DIMM slots and PCIe 3.0, and it is the direct counterpart to the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10. This unit ships configured with two Xeon Silver 4208 processors (8 cores / 16 threads, 2.1GHz, 85W), 32GB of DDR4-2133 across two modules, two 1.2TB SAS drives in an 8-bay 2.5-inch front cage, a PERC RAID controller and redundant hot-plug power supplies.

- 2 x 1.2TB SAS 2.5" hot-plug drives in the front cage

Where the Silver 4208 sits
The Silver 4208 is an 8-core Cascade Lake part at 2.1GHz with a 85W TDP — the low-power end of the R740's supported processor range. In practice that makes this configuration a good fit for DNS/DHCP, file and print, backup targets, lightweight virtualization and lab clusters, where core count matters less than low idle power and predictable thermals. If your workload needs more cores, the same chassis takes higher-core Xeon Scalable parts — tell us the model you have in mind and we will confirm what the installed System BIOS supports.
R740 vs HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10
These two are the standard 2U dual-socket Intel platforms and are cross-shopped constantly. Both take two Xeon Scalable processors, both offer 8-bay 2.5" front cages, and both are managed out-of-band (iDRAC 9 vs iLO 5). The practical difference is ecosystem: if your fleet runs Dell OpenManage and you already hold PERC spares, the R740 keeps your tooling and spares pool uniform. If you run HPE, the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 8SFF is the equivalent. We stock both — ask for a quote on whichever matches your rack, or browse all used rack servers and barebones.
Why buy from Zhongxin Data
- In-house re-flash & testing — every unit runs on our own test line before it ships; we do not resell untested pallet stock.
- Reference image plus real photos on request — the image above is a stock reference photo for this model. Ask and we will send photos of the specific unit offered, before you commit.
- Configuration answered in writing — controller model, PSU wattage, rail availability and drive health are confirmed per unit, not assumed from the model name.
- 90-day warranty from delivery.
Parts this build usually needs
If you are populating the remaining bays, look at 2.5-inch SAS enterprise drives. To lift memory, we quote DDR4 RDIMM server memory per module against the 24 DIMM slots. For cache, RAID 6 or external JBOD, a Broadcom MegaRAID controller replaces the fitted PERC. If you also run single-socket 1U nodes for scale-out tiers, see our PowerEdge R650xs 1U 8-bay.

Frequently asked questions
Is this server complete and working?
Yes — this is a configured unit, not a barebone. Both processors, 32GB of memory and two 1.2TB SAS drives are installed. Every unit is bench-tested on our own test line before it ships, and is covered by a 90-day warranty from delivery.
Which RAID controller and power supply does it ship with?
A PERC RAID controller and redundant hot-plug power supplies are fitted, but the exact controller model and PSU wattage vary between units. Ask us and we will confirm both for the specific unit we are offering you, in writing, before you order.
Can I add more memory or drives?
Yes. The chassis has 24 DIMM slots and 6 free 2.5" bays in this configuration. Tell us the memory capacity and drive type you want and we will quote the additional parts alongside the server.
Are rails included?
Rails are not included with this unit. Tell us your rack type in the enquiry and we will confirm whether rails are available with the unit we hold, or quote them separately.
How do I get pricing?
Message WhatsApp +86 13068616914 with the model, quantity, whether you need rails or extra drives, and the destination country. We quote against that configuration and the quote is valid for the day of issue.
