Quick answer: This is a used Dell PowerEdge R640 barebone — a complete 1U dual-socket chassis with an 8x 2.5" SFF backplane, both processor heatsinks, PCIe risers, hot-plug redundant power supplies and rails, but with no processors, no memory, no drives and no RAID or HBA controller fitted. It is the right buy if you already hold LGA3647 Xeon Scalable processors and DDR4 RDIMMs and want a 1U platform to build on. Each unit is bench-tested on our own line, carries a 90-day warranty from delivery, and is quoted per unit or per volume order.

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is the mainstream 1U dual-socket workhorse of Dell's 14th generation. Two LGA3647 sockets accept first- and second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, 24 DIMM slots take DDR4 RDIMMs at 2666 or 2933 MT/s depending on the processor generation, and the whole platform sits on PCIe 3.0 with up to three expansion slots through the risers. It is the generation that is leaving data centres in volume right now, which is exactly why the parts are cheap and the chassis are plentiful — and why a barebone is often the cheapest way into a 1U node if you already have the silicon.

What that means in practice: this listing is a platform, not a configured server. If you have pulled processors and memory from a decommissioned estate, or you buy them separately at better prices than a reseller will quote for an assembled unit, a barebone is the cheapest route to a working 1U machine. If you want a unit that runs on arrival, look at our configured PowerEdge R650 instead — same 1U role, one generation newer, delivered complete.

Why buy a barebone instead of a configured unit

The economics are simple and they are not the same for every buyer. A configured R640 carries the reseller's cost of processors, memory and drives plus the margin on all three. A barebone carries the cost of a chassis. If you already own LGA3647 processors from a retired estate, or you buy DDR4 RDIMMs in lots at prices a reseller cannot match, assembling the machine yourself is materially cheaper than buying it assembled — and you end up with exactly the memory population and drive mix you wanted rather than whatever was in the box.

The trade-off is that you take on the compatibility check. Three things bite people on this platform: processor generation (a first-generation Scalable part will not run at 2933 MT/s memory speed, and older BIOS revisions may not post a second-generation part at all), heatsink rating (the heatsinks in a 1U R640 are sized by processor TDP class — the ones included here are for the standard TDP parts, so confirm before you fit a high-TDP SKU), and controller choice depending on whether your drives are SAS or SATA and whether you want hardware RAID or pass-through. We will confirm all three against the unit we are offering before you commit, in writing.

R640 vs the R650 we also list

Both are 1U dual-socket Dell platforms and both turn up in the same RFQs, so it is worth being precise about the difference. The R640 is 14th generation: LGA3647 sockets, DDR4 at 2666 or 2933, PCIe 3.0, 24 DIMM slots. The PowerEdge R650 is 15th generation: LGA4189 sockets for 3rd Gen Xeon Scalable, DDR4-3200 across eight channels per socket, PCIe 4.0. In one sentence: the R640 is the cheaper platform to build on if you already hold 1st or 2nd Gen Scalable parts, and the R650 is the one to take if you are buying processors now and want PCIe 4.0 and faster memory.

If you are filling a shallow cabinet rather than a standard-depth rack, the PowerEdge R650xs is the short-depth 1U variant. If 1U density is not the constraint and you would rather have more drive bays and expansion room, our PowerEdge R760 is the 2U Intel option and the PowerEdge R7525 is the 2U AMD option. You can also browse all used rack servers and barebones for the full list.

Need processors too? Building this node out? The R640 takes FCLGA4189 (Ice Lake) processors - we stock 4310 / 4314 / 4316 / 5318Y / 6338 / 6336Y / 6348 / 8360Y for this board, see the server processors range.

Why buy from Zhongxin Data

  • In-house re-flash & testing — every chassis and backplane is checked on our own test line before it ships; we do not resell untested pallet lots.
  • Barebone condition stated plainly — what is fitted and what is not is listed above in full, so there is no surprise when you open the box.
  • Compatibility confirmed in writing — processor generation, heatsink TDP class, backplane type and controller fit are confirmed per unit, not assumed from the model name.
  • Photos of the actual unit on request — the image above is the reference image for this model. Ask and we will send photos of the specific unit offered, before you commit.
  • Single units or volume — we quote one chassis or a rack of them, with volume tiers from 10 units.
  • 90-day warranty from delivery.

This is a quote-based listing — there is no public price, because the price depends on quantity and destination, and on whether you want the barebone as described or with processors, memory, drives and a controller added. Send us the quantity, the destination country, and the configuration you intend to build (processor model, memory target, drive type, controller) and we will come back with pricing for that exact combination. Quotes are valid for the day of issue.

Frequently asked questions

Is this R640 barebone in stock?

Yes — this barebone is in stock. Send the quantity you need and the destination country and we will confirm availability for that quantity and quote the unit. Availability is checked per part number, and if you want processors, memory or a controller added we will confirm those separately against what we hold.

What exactly is included in "barebone"?

Chassis, 8 x 2.5" SFF backplane, both processor heatsinks, PCIe risers, hot-plug redundant power supplies, fans and fan cage, and rails. Not included: processors, memory, drives, RAID or HBA controller, network adapters, optics, operating system.

Which processors fit this chassis?

LGA3647 Intel Xeon Scalable, first or second generation. Tell us the exact processor model you intend to use and we will confirm socket support, heatsink TDP class and whether the BIOS revision on the unit posts that part before you buy.

Can you supply the processors, memory and drives too?

Yes. Send the target configuration — processor model, memory capacity, drive type and size, and the controller you want — and we will quote the whole build rather than the barebone alone. Models listed on zhongxindata.hk are in stock, and every part is confirmed by part number.

Does the 8 x 2.5" backplane support SAS and SATA?

Yes — the backplane takes 2.5" SAS or SATA drives in hot-plug carriers. What you can actually run depends on the controller you fit: a PERC gives you hardware RAID, an HBA gives you pass-through. Tell us which and we will confirm compatibility.

How many DIMM slots does the R640 have?

24 DDR4 DIMM slots across both sockets. Speed depends on the processor generation: 2666 MT/s with first-generation Xeon Scalable, 2933 MT/s with second-generation parts. RDIMM and LRDIMM are both supported depending on the capacity you are targeting.

Are rails and power supplies included?

Yes — rails are included with this unit, and the chassis ships with hot-plug redundant power supplies. The supply rating is confirmed per unit; tell us your rack type and power budget in the enquiry and we will confirm both before shipping.

Can I buy a quantity of these?

Yes. We sell single units and volume orders, with volume tiers starting at 10 units. Send the quantity you need and we will confirm what we can allocate on that schedule, along with pricing for the batch.

How do I get pricing?

Message WhatsApp +86 13068616914 with the model, quantity, and destination country. We quote against that configuration and the quote is valid for the day of issue.
